Meet the artist

Sofia Fortunato

Although originally from Venezuela, Sofia feels that she belongs to many places. She traveled from the Caribbean to the North Sea and lived in the land of the Vikings, Norway, for ten years. She obtained a PhD in Evolutionary Biology at the University of Bergen, in 2015. It was in Norway, during a long dark rainy winter in 2006, when she discovered her passion for arts. Her first paintings consisted of colorful butterflies on a canvas. By using acrylic paint, her first work created a harmonious atmosphere that made you forget about dark winter nights.  She had her first solo exhibition at a local cafe in Bergen. She continued her path as an artist, in parallel with sciences by obtaining two certificates in Natural History scientific illustration. Some of her drawings were included in her own scientific work. But it wasn't until two years ago when she found her true artistic voice and a passion for writing children's books. Eventually, she decided to leave her scientific-academic path to become a children book author-illustrator and make room in her life to paint even more.

Her recent work tells stories about the ocean, the forest and human connection to mother nature. She uses a variety of art techniques, including writing, photography, and painting. She created two projects with her partner in life, 1) a website which engages parents with young children in nature and outdoor living, under the name of  OutdoorHobbits, and 2) her own brand name to sell her art, Miss Sofi F. art. She currently lives in Airlie Beach, Queensland Australia. Her house is only 10 minutes walk to the sea.

And when she isn't painting or writing, she loves teaching kids to swim.

Ocean-inspired artist: My projects

I dream of a clean blue ocean in which every animal can live in harmony with humans.

Artist's inspiration

My inspiration dates to the times where I lived in my homeland Venezuela. I used to have a wonderful seaside house. Its view the Caribbean Sea. I would go to bed with the sound of the waves every weekend and holidays. I learned to swim and snorkel at a very young age so I could discover the underwater world. This attachment with the ocean set me up into studying Biology. I eventually specialized in coral reef ecology.  However, my encounters with Venezuelan reef in early 2000, during my studies, were a devastating experience. For the first time, I realized the huge impact of humans on marine ecosystems. It made me wanted to continue my career as a scientist and since then I had a desire to protect the natural world. Since then, I dream of a blue clean ocean in which every animal can live in harmony with humans. I dream of a blue ocean, with healthy coral reefs. I always try to search for a way to protect our planet, I do it on a small scale from home, with my art, and by adopting an environmentally friendly lifestyle. With art, I want to express environmental awareness. My art invites people to contemplate the stunning beauty of our oceans. My art is also a call for you to always remember that our planet resources aren't limitless, it is a call to make you aware that the colors in the sea will perhaps one day vanished.
