Meet the artist

Sofia Fortunato

Sofia Fortunato

A biologist and artist

Sofia Fortunato is originally from Caracas Venezuela. She lived in Norway for ten years where she obtained Msc in Marine Microbiology and a PhD in Evolutionary Biology at the University of Bergen. In parallel with her education, during her time in Norway, she developed a “secret life” in the arts. She painted and became a science illustrator. She then moved to Australia to pursue a postdoc at James Cook University in Townsville. It was during her postdoc position that she felt a strong call from the artist side within herself and decided to take a career approach in which she could combine art and science. In the past two years, she became a writer and illustrator. She currently lives in Airlie Beach -a tropical paradise in Queensland, Australia- with her two daughters and Australian partner. Her home is close to the ocean and the rainforest which inspires her to write about nature. She is currently writing an illustrating her first children’s book series and is the creator of the project OutdoorHobbits.

And when she isn't painting or writing, she loves teaching kids to swim.

Ocean-inspired artist: My projects

Photography

I dream of a clean blue ocean in which every animal can live in harmony with humans.

Artist's inspiration

My inspiration dates to the times where I lived in my homeland Venezuela. I used to have a wonderful seaside house. Its view the Caribbean Sea. I would go to bed with the sound of the waves every weekend and holidays. I learned to swim and snorkel at a very young age so I could discover the underwater world. This attachment with the ocean set me up into studying Biology. I eventually specialized in coral reef ecology.  However, my encounters with Venezuelan reef in early 2000, during my studies, were a devastating experience. For the first time, I realized the huge impact of humans on marine ecosystems. It made me wanted to continue my career as a scientist and since then I had a desire to protect the natural world. Since then, I dream of a blue clean ocean in which every animal can live in harmony with humans. I dream of a blue ocean, with healthy coral reefs. I always try to search for a way to protect our planet, I do it on a small scale from home, with my art, and by adopting an environmentally friendly lifestyle. With art, I want to express environmental awareness. My art invites people to contemplate the stunning beauty of our oceans. My art is also a call for you to always remember that our planet resources aren't limitless, it is a call to make you aware that the colors in the sea will perhaps one day vanished.
